The Itinerary:
Wednesday, June 4, 2008
Depart Atlanta on Lufthansa flight 445 to Frankfurt.

Thursday, June 5, 2008
Arrive Frankfurt and transfer to Lufthansa flight 4060 into Florence. We're staying at Hotel Loggiato dei Serviti. We'll begin our Italian journey with a visit to the Accademia and see the trophy of the Renaissance, Michelangelo's David. Later we'll see the replica of David that was placed were Michelangelo intended, outside, rather than locked up in a museum. We'll take a walking tour through Florence before celebrating Mass at the Duomo.

Friday, June 6, 2008
This is the art capital of Europe and today we'll journey back into the Renaissance with a visit to the Uffizi Gallery where we'll see works by Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, Botticelli, and many more. Next we'll visit the 'Who's Who' of Florence at the church of Santa Croce. Here we'll see the tombs of Michelangelo and Galileo with funerary monuments to other hometown heros, Machiavelli and Dante. After we celebrate Mass here, you'll have some time to explore Florence on your own.

Saturday, June 7, 2008
This morning we'll travel to Assisi. Before we arrive in Assisi we'll stop at the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli where we'll celebrate Mass. Inside the basilica we'll see the Porziuncola, one of the churches St. Francis restored. After Mass we'll continue up the mountain into Assisi. We're staying at Hotel Umbra located just off Piazza del Comune. Once we settle in we'll walk down to San Damiano. Later tonight, after the shops close and the tour buses leave, we'll have Assisi all to ourselves. We'll stroll through town and get a better feel for what Assisi was like in the time of St. Francis.

Sunday, June 8, 2008
We'll wake up early to celebrate Mass at the Tomb of St. Francis. Then we'll walk in the footsteps of Francis as we visit the Basilica built in his honor, San Francesco. Next we'll walk over to the church where both he and St. Clare were Baptized, San Rufino. Then we'll visit the Basilica of St. Clare, where the true San Damiano cross hangs. You'll have the afternoon free in Assisi. The town has a lot to offer the pilgrim, the tourist, and even the shopper.

Monday, June 9, 2008
This morning we travel to Rome. We're staying at Hotel Alimandi. Today we'll take an excursion into early Christian Rome with a
visit to the San Callisto Catacombs. Here our guide will lead us deep underground to where so many early Christians, including six popes and St. Cecilia, were laid to rest. Next we'll visit St. Paul's burial place, St. Paul Outside the Walls, where we'll celebrate Mass.

Tuesday, June 10, 2008
This morning we'll visit St. Mary Major. We'll tour the church and celebrate Mass. After Mass we'll dig into Ancient Rome with a walking tour through Palatine Hill, the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, Mamertine Prison and the Pantheon. Our tour ends at the Pantheon with plenty of options for eating and shopping.

Wednesday, June 11, 2008
This morning we'll attend the weekly audience with Pope Benedict XVI (his schedule permitting). From here we'll head over to the cathedral of Rome, St. John Lateran, to celebrate Mass. Above the baldacchino are the heads of St. Peter and St. Paul. In the mosaic behind them we'll see one of the first legal images of Christ. Then we'll cross the street and begin our journey through the Passion of our Lord as we ascend the Santa Scala, the stairs Christ climbed the day he was sentenced to death. From here we'll prayerfully walk to Santa Croce in Gerusalemme which holds many relics of the Passion, including two thorns from the crown of thorns, a nail from the crucifixion, the Titulus, part of the title of the cross, and splinters from the cross.

Thursday, June 12, 2008
We'll wake up early this morning to celebrate Mass in St. Peter's Basilica. This morning we'll tour the Vatican Museums, including the Sistine Chapel. Then we'll visit St. Peter's Basilica. You'll have the remainder of the day to explore Rome on your own. We'll meet back up this evening for a farewell dinner.
